It’s easy to become numb to certain buzzwords we hear constantly in the media. There’s a humdrum stream of chatter concerning how to cut business and living costs and we hear the term “energy efficiency” on the daily. When it comes to LEDs (light-emitting diodes) however, it’s time to wake up and take notice! At least that’s what PG&E, the largest utility in California, did and they were amazed by the results.
In order to test the actual efficiency of LED lighting, PG&E enlisted the help of Boston-based company Digital Lumens. A networked LED system was installed in a 44,800-square-foot Ace Hardware distribution warehouse in California.
In California, energy efficiency is becoming a necessity. In fact, the Emerging Technologies Coordinating Council is in charge of making sure companies conserve as much energy as possible.
The Claim – Digital Lumens said they could save customers 90% by installing LED systems.
The Test – More than 100 metal-halide luminaries were replaced with LED lighting. The testing of this new system ensued which portrayed a variety of normal energy situations that would be faced by the company.
The Result – Lighting related energy use dropped by 93%. In addition, when employees were asked for their feedback regarding the new lighting they reported that they “prefer the lighting conditions of the post-retrofit.”
So why isn’t everyone using LEDs? Well, while they have been in existence in their earliest forms for decades LEDs are only recently becoming popular since time and again they are proving to not only conserve energy but capital as well.
